A symbol of global conservation
The red panda is largely herbivorous and feeds primarily on bamboo, mainly the genera Phyllostachys, Sinarundinaria, Thamnocalamus and Chimonobambusa.
The red panda inhabits coniferous forests as well as temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, favouring steep slopes with dense bamboo cover close to water sources.
There is an estimated population of two thousand five hundred mature individuals, and it is considered an endangered species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The red panda is an endangered species, as its populations are threatened by habitat loss, poaching and inbreeding.
